One question we often hear from new customers—especially those switching to Chem-Tech after regular service with another pest control company—is:
“Do you knock down the cobwebs around the soffits?”
Our answer is pretty simple:
No. We kill the spiders.
That answer sometimes catches people off guard. After all, if your pest control company has always brushed down the webs around your house, it certainly looks like they’re doing something.
But our goal isn’t to make the cobwebs disappear for a few days. Our goal is to control the spiders that are making them.
Why Are There So Many Cobwebs Around Your Soffits?
Take a look around the outside of your home, especially underneath the soffits and around exterior lights. Those are some of the most common places to find spider webs.
There’s a good reason for that.
Lights attract insects. Insects attract spiders. And soffits provide protected areas where spiders can build webs and wait for their next meal.
That’s why treating the soffits is an important part of our exterior pest control service.
Many pest control treatments focus primarily on the lower portion of the home—the foundation, around doors and windows, and other easily accessible areas. At Chem-Tech, we treat the soffit areas too.
And we aren’t just treating them because of spiders.
Your Soffits Can Be a Highway Into Your Attic
Soffits and soffit vents are common areas where pests can find their way into attic spaces.
Spiders, boxelder bugs, Asian lady beetles, stink bugs and wasps are just some of the pests we commonly find gathering around these areas. Especially in the fall.
Once they find openings, gaps or vents that allow access, your attic can provide a protected place for them to overwinter or nest.
Instead of waiting until those pests are already inside, our approach is to treat the areas they’re likely to encounter before they get into the structure.
Think of it as creating a treatment zone around one of the home’s most common pest entry areas.
What About Treating the Attic?
This leads to another question we hear:
“Can you just treat my attic?”
We can treat attics when there is a specific reason to do so, but most properly insulated attics don’t benefit from routinely spraying the entire attic.
There’s a practical reason.
If an attic is properly insulated, much of the space shouldn’t be walked through unnecessarily. Moving through the attic can disturb insulation, reduce its effectiveness and still doesn’t guarantee that every crack, crevice or pest-harboring area can be reached.
Trying to penetrate layers of insulation with a pesticide treatment isn’t necessarily the best approach either.
Whenever possible, we’d rather stop the pest before it gets into the attic in the first place.
That’s another reason treating soffits and other exterior entry areas is such an important part of our program.
So Why Don’t We Remove the Webs?
Because the web itself isn’t the problem.
The spider is.
Some spiders can also recycle or reuse web material. When appropriate products are applied to areas where spiders travel and build their webs, those locations become part of the overall treatment strategy.
Simply brushing a web away doesn’t provide long-term spider control. If the conditions that attracted the spider haven’t changed—and the spider is still alive—it can simply build another web.
We’ve seen the difference firsthand.
When we begin servicing a new customer who has had regular pest control from another company for years, we often find a surprising amount of webbing around soffits and other protected areas.
Compare that with customers who have been on our Bi-Monthly Pest Control Program, and it’s common to find very little spider activity or webbing around their homes.
That’s not because somebody has been walking around every two months with a cobweb brush.
It’s because we’re controlling the spiders.
Pest Control Isn’t Always Instant
We also want customers to understand something about our approach to pest control.
Our Bi-Monthly Pest Control Program isn’t designed around the idea that one treatment will instantly eliminate every pest living in every crack, crevice, attic space and hidden area of your home.
Pest control is a process.
We service the exterior of the home every 60 days, maintaining treatment in the areas where pests live, travel and attempt to enter the structure.
Over time, that allows us to gain control not only around the obvious areas of the home, but also in those cracks, crevices and difficult-to-reach spaces where pest populations can develop.
As pest activity declines, something else happens:
Those cobwebs start disappearing too.
Don’t Just Knock Down the Evidence. Control the Problem.
At Chem-Tech Termite & Pest Control, we’ve been protecting homes in Leavenworth and the Kansas City area since 1978.
Our approach is simple: Don’t just treat what you can see. Treat the areas that matter.
That means paying attention to foundations, doors, windows, cracks, crevices—and yes, those soffits overhead.
So the next time you see cobwebs hanging around the outside of your house, don’t just ask who’s going to knock them down.
Ask why the spiders are still there.
